Abstract

The objective of the research was to evaluate the predictive power of socioeconomic background and the variables used in the admission process on the academic performance of first year students accepted in normal schools. 1 903 aspiring teachers participated; this population was divided into two parts, and the first one refersto the 1142 not accepted and the second one to those accepted (761). By an analysis student t, was found that students admitted to present a higher socioeconomic background than their not accepted mates. The variables that predicted the first academic year of study were the final grades from high school, index of home possessions and the scores of the EXANI II. It was concluded that socioeconomic variables influence not only in access, during teacher training too.
