Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the Social Representations (sr) of elementary school teachers about their students’ gender expressions. We carried out a descriptive and qualitative research in Mexico City. To answer the research question, we used a semi-structured interview and the sentence completion test. Twelve public elementary school teachers participated. Prominent among our main findings is the tendency to associate gender with the stereotyped characteristics that distinguish men and women. These rss have been widely accepted in our society and many times they have served to justify the assignment of social roles, thus producing stereotypes. However, our results indicate that as a society, we are in a gradual process of restructuring our thinking around gender.
